Weekly Learning Review :Week Ending: 8 March 2018

Weekly Learning Review
Class:      4A & 4B
Week Ending: 8/3/2018
·         Spelling: This week, we discussed the difference between suffix and word endings. We spelled and defined words with common word endings: ‘ough’, ‘ould’, ‘ought’ and ‘ound’. We used Quizlet flashcards to define terms and create sentence examples.
·         Reading Comprehension: This week, we answered questions about informational texts. We used knowledge of different organisational features to find information effectively. We used dictionaries, library books and the internet to gather up information about a topic. We introduced a reading skill called scanningScanning is looking for information by reading at a quicker pace to look for key words. We read an informational text and scanned the text for key words that the students were unsure about. We found the definitions using the dictionary.
·         Creative Writing: The students developed and refined ideas in writing using planning strategies. They summarized and shaped material and ideas from different sources to write convincing and informative non-narrative texts. Then, the children organised the text into paragraphs to distinguish different information. In their writing, they used adverbs and conjunctions to establish cohesion within paragraphs. The students clarified meaning and point of view by using varied sentence structure (commas to mark clauses).
·         Grammar: Students identified the subject, verb and objects in a sentence.
·         Adding: Students are able to solve addition problems using the place value strategy. The place value strategy is when you rewrite the addition problem in place value numbers. For example, 487 + 264. Rewrite the addition problem in place value numbers: 400 + 80 + 7 = 487 / 200 + 60 + 4 = 264. Next, add the numbers based on place value: (400+200) + (80+60) + (7+4) = 751.
·         Sixes: Students learned that the multiplication sentence has a factor and a product. They learned a new tip to help recall multiplication facts on the 6 times table. All numbers in the 6 times table are even. – they end with 0,2,4,6 or 8. They are all a multiple of 3 so they can be divided by 3.
·         Measuring Sound: Students explored how sounds are made when objects, materials or air vibrate and how sound is measured in decibels. Sound levels can be measured in decibels using a sound level meter.  Sounds can be soft or loud and the loudness of a sound is its volume. The decibel scale is used to give the sound levels of different sounds or noises.

We carried it through in class by learning about feelings, social interaction, diversity, social structures, discrimination, justice, power and conflict that provided opportunities to explore the issue of bullying, why it happens and how to prevent it.
